How To Draw Red Hood Easy

red riding hood halloween costume

Keith Scott Morton

Inspired by the favorite Grimm's fairy tale, this costume will turn any little girl into a dutiful granddaughter carrying provisions through the forest. Just add a wolf and the picture is complete. This costume is a size 6/8. You can make all or parts of it—the cape would work well in any color or pattern (say, in black for Zorro, or blue for a superhero).

4 red 3/4-inch Velcro coins

1 yard white felt

Apron

1. For the waistband, measure the child around her waist. Add 8 inches. Cut a strip of the white felt that is 3 1/2 inches wide by this measurement long.

2. Using the bib pattern, cut out one piece of white felt. Using the back strap pattern, cut 2 pieces of white felt. Sew the straps to the bib front at the shoulder seams, using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Sew down the seam allowance.

3. Using the apron skirt pattern, cut out one piece of white felt. Make a small notch at the center front top.

4. Hand sew 2 parallel lines of stitches 1/2 inch apart along the top of the apron skirt. Gather the top of the apron skirt until it is about 4 inches wider than the bottom of the bib front. Pin the center top of the apron skirt to the center bottom of the white felt waistband. Matching edges, pin in place and sew together, using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Pin the bottom of the bib to the apron/waistband seam, wrong sides facing, matching at the center front. Sew in place. Bring the bib front up so it looks like an apron. Pin the waistband in place on top of the bib front and sew it down. Sew the excess seam allowance for the apron skirt up against the waistband on the inside.

5. Attach the white Velcro as follows: Cut 2 hook (rough) strips 6 inches long and attach to the inside of the back straps at the base where they will meet up with the waistband. Cut the 2 loop (fuzzy) strips 8 inches long, and pin to the outside of the waistband, one above the other, horizontally. Sew in place. Cut 2 hook (rough) strips 8 inches long and attach on the other side of the fabric, to the wrong side of the waistband. You can sew them right on the same stitching lines. And finally, cut 2 loop (fuzzy) strips 8 inches long and attach these, one above the other, on the outside of the other end of the waistband.

Painting the Dress and Apron

1. Using the stencil brush, paint red polka dots onto the dress skirt.

2. Using the blue fabric marker, draw vertical blue stripes, about 2 inches apart, on the bib front, back straps, waistband, and apron skirt.

3. Using the paring knife, cut the potato in half and then draw a flower, 1 to 1 1/2 inches wide, on one of the halves. Cut away the excess potato around the flower shape. Apply red paint to it and stamp flowers in between the blue lines. This will be a little tricky where the apron is gathered to the waistband, but it is possible to smooth it long enough to print. With the fabric marker, put blue dots in the middle of each flower.

Hooded Cape

1. Measure from the child's shoulder to the knee and adjust the cape pattern so that its full length comes to several inches below the knee. Using this pattern, cut out a double layer of red felt, aligning the fold with the fold mark on the pattern. Using the hood pattern, cut out the 2 pieces of red felt. Using the hood facing pattern, cut out 2 pieces of red felt.

2. Pin and sew the back and top seams of the hood together, using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Pin and sew the top of the facing pieces together, using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Remove the pins. Iron open the seams.

3. Match the front of the facing to the front of the hood and pin in place, making sure the seams match up and the right sides are together. Sew 1/4-inch seam; remove the pins. Press the seam open. Fold the facing in along this seam and pin to the inside of the hood. Sew the facing in place. Remove the pins. Press the seam open. Fold the facing in along this seam and pin to the inside of the hood. Sew the facing in place. Remove the pins. Turn the hood right side out again. Turn the facing/hood front edge back to the notch on the hood at the neck. Pin in place.

4. Pin the hood to the cape, right sides together, matching up the hood back seam with the cape center back notch. Make sure the hood opening is equidistant on both sides of the front cape opening. Sew the hood to the cape, using a 1/2-inch seam allowance, and securing the folded-back facing/hood edge. Stitch down the seam allowance to the cape neck.

5. Fold both sides of the cape front 1/2 inch and sew down.

6. On the child's right side of the cape, on the inside along the folded-in edge, pin and sew a line of 4 hook (rough) red Velcro coins, starting at the top and evenly spaced about every 2 inches. Pin and sew the loop (fuzzy) Velcro to the outside of the left side.
